Story
Portraits of Santonio Holmes III and Tahira Austin, two sickle cell disease advocates

On June 19, we mark World Sickle Cell Day and acknowledge the more than 4 million people around the world who live with this genetic blood disorder. We talked to two patients on the World of Promise podcast.

Philadelphia resident Tahirah Austin, now in her 30s, was diagnosed at age 6 and says she has a moral obligation to speak out on behalf of others.

In his football career, former Pittsburgh Steeler Santonio Holmes will be long remembered for his “perfect catch” that earned him a Super Bowl XLIII  MVP trophy. But after retirement, he continues to build his legacy off the field through the III & Long Foundation. Holmes’s son TJ lives with sickle cell disease and his nonprofit organization helps families similarly affected. This podcast episode included Holmes, TJ and TJ’s mom, Nicole King.
