To Turn Inward or Reach Out?

Alpha 1 patient – and advocate for others – Richard Lovrich shares his philosophy about coping with a rare disease.

Story

For someone diagnosed with a rare disease, the first, understandable impulse might be to turn inward and focus on yourself.

While attention to your own health and well-being is a must, Richard Lovrich recommends flipping the script. Though he’s managing the rare disease Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, which can seriously impact breathing, he makes a conscious effort to help others. Lovrich is an energetic advocate for those who have Alpha 1 and often uses his artistic eye to take their photos at disease awareness events.
